My journey on completing my UX/UI foundation course, and tips on how you can complete yours too…
So, once I decided on a 3 month program, that end up taking me 7 months (will mention that later in the blog) just in the foundations alone. I jumped in head first.
I was pleasantly surprised, on all the information, it was a lot and I definitely worked very hard and kept my why in the front of my mind. It became my obsession, luckily for me. I had a very supportive and loving husband who allowed me to not work as I really devoted all my days, time, effort, to learn UX/UI fundamental foundations.
Not only did I follow the bootcamp foundations, which was self study, self paced, and self learning, a few videos in the modules here and there. Speakers series, several articles, YouTube links, unlimited 1:1 mentorship, community in slack, and recommendations on books to purchase. I couldn’t believe the amount of information that I consumed. I literally made it my life, I ate, breathed, slept, had dreams and maybe even nightmares about UX/UI. Thanks to the unlimited mentor support I was able to really get honest and positive feedback.
I had to submit my case study multiple times, with several mentors looking over it. Honestly, it was a challenge, I had several melt downs, pity parties, days where I decided I just wouldn’t look at it. I would go do something fun, and then revisit it later. So that I could allow my creativity to flow… Again having my why in the for front of mind, keep me going even when motivation wasn’t there to fuel me. 3 months turned into 7 months on foundations…
I would say that learning UX/UI it was right up there with being in Nursing school all over again. Mind you, I had no prior experience to UX/UI, although I have a minor in Fashion Merchandise that was the closest to anything creative I have experienced in a “professional” setting. Not saying it was impossible to complete the foundations in the three months, that is “standard” but, for me, it took about seven months, with several breaks and extensions in between.
Tips to stay motivated to finish foundations…
Tips when UX/UI foundations aren’t pinning out in the 3 months, as you “planned.”
- Don’t give up and remember if you have no prior experience you are learning, be gracious to yourself.
- Face your own race and don’t look at what other people are doing. Using it as inspiration but don’t be jealous of other people’s progress, you’ll get there.
- Keep going, take the feedback and use it to build yourself up and your case study.
- Reevaluate and put in the work.
- My last tip, ask for help and use all the resources, also do your own research to help yourself.
All in all, don’t give up. You are equipment to do this, you can complete the bootcamp and learn the foundations of UX/UI, don’t give up and keep going until you finish… You’ve got this… Let me know about your journey into UX/UI and any setbacks you’ve had learning UX/UI below…
