An AI experiment with surprising results
Like everyone else, I recently got caught in the “AI hype”. I call it “hype” for now because while I do believe this thing will change the way we interact and live with technology, I also think that this is just the beginning, and with beginnings comes a lot of overhype, especially in the technology world. ChatGPT came out and changed the AI game, and then all the big companies realized they were going to be left behind unless they started investing in it too. At the end of all this rush, the AI field will be filled with even more players than right now, but only a few will stand out, just like what we saw with computers, phones, tablets, or even sound systems…
The most impressive thing about ChatGPT is how “natural” it feels to interact with, and how it’s able to structure its thought process. Whether to write a paper, translate text, or get answers about anything (although they’re not always accurate), what got ChatGPT ahead of the competition is its “fluency” in the language it uses, and not just in English.
Midjourney is another AI that came out a little earlier than ChatGPT, and creates images from textual descriptions. What got it ahead of its competition is its ease of use, its speed, and its accuracy. The interesting thing about this AI is that it teaches us, humans, how to describe things in a concise manner. If you want the AI to represent something you envision accurately, you have to be good with words and write a comprehensive descriptive text of your image. It’s all about providing the right “prompts”. Then, you can select one of the 4 versions generated by the AI, and iterate on that. It’s a thought-building and thought-provoking process which I love because you get a clearer idea of your concept as you move along.
I had fun trying to combine the power of both AIs, by first asking ChatGPT to write exhaustive descriptions of things based on simple prompts, and then feeding those into the Midjourney engine to see what it would come up with. In this article, I will share the results of my experiment.

This was actually my first ever Midjourney prompt, and I didn’t ask ChatGPT to fine-tune it and/or add more information. Yet somehow, the first result provided by Midjourney was on point, very accurate, and I didn’t feel like it needed any improvement.
I simply exported the option I thought was the best (the one in the rop right corner) and was thrilled with the result:
The goal of this experiment was to combine the power of 2 AI engines to see how accurate the results could be. This raises the question of “human mind accuracy”. How can we ever be certain that an image generated by Midjourney, or a text generated by ChatGPT, matches our vision to the highest standard? How can we be certain that we are not biased, that what we thought we had in mind is actually a mental snapshot instantly generated as soon as we see the AI result? As soon as we see an AI-generated image based on our prompt, our vision of what we thought we had in mind is forever altered. Is the underwater baby tiger surrounded by flowers (featured above) actually a product of my imagination, simply because I came up with the descriptive text that led to its creation? Or is it a 100% AI-based creation that tricks me into thinking I’m good at picturing things?
I believe the power of AI lies in combining human traits that cannot be replicated (things like dreams, thought patterns…) with content-generating solutions like ChatGPT and Midjourney. AI is not here to automate everything and have us sit back, relax and enjoy the show. At least not if you want to be part of the future revolution. It’s a new stepping stone into the world of creativity, and only those who understand its true power and are willing to harness it to their advantage will come out on top.
