In this article, I’ll share some of the ways which I use in my design process and how it can benefit other designers in their work.
For over past few months, I have found that using ChatGPT into my designs has greatly enhanced my ability to create intuitive and user-friendly interfaces and quickly generating copy and content for my clients, and even generating new ideas and concepts for my projects.
The way it explains complex things in a few words, just blew my mind. It is indeed intelligent and to be honest, I’m addicted to it.
Now, let’s get started:
Although ChatGPT is a text-based AI, we can still use it for generating ideas which we can then illustrate into something visual. ChatGPT is an Open AI which is designed to generate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and topics, ranging from general knowledge to specific domains like science, technology, history and more. Indeed, it’s not 100% correct. We can’t totally rely on AI-generated responses for UX design decisions as design requires a deep understanding of the user’s need, behavior and motivations which can be gained through user research, user testing and many more. It may not be able to provide the same level of empathy and creativity that a human designer can do. So, ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for generating ideas and insights, it is best used in conjuction with other design methods and should not be relied on as the solo source of design decisions.
Here are some ways in which I use ChatGPT in my design process:
1. Design ideation
While creating case studies, you can ask Chatgpt to provide a overview of your project on which you need to work. It gives you all required data points, research, wrapping up your project. Here’s an example:
It provides answer in threads. When a question is asked, a thread is created ans subsequent questions are placed within that thread. User can ask questions related to previous question within same thread, AI understands the context and provides relevant responses.
2. No more Lorem Ipsum!
Now, instead of copying from another website or doing Lorem Ipsum, you can easily go to Chat GPT and ask for generating copy, headlines and taglines. This can save time and effort and designers who may not have skills to create content.
You can ask ChatGPT for any content which you need, how much words you want etc. Here’s an example:
3. User research
It helps you providing insights into user behavior, preferences and needs. It helps you to find design problems with solutions, insights into user behavior, preferences and needs, which meet the need for their target audience. Also, you can prompt ChatGPT with a request such as “Can you please summarize my research and extract the important points as bullet points?” to condense your research into a shorter summary.
Creating user personas
One of the most vital stages of UX research is creating user personas. It helps in framing things in a structured way. Here’s an example:
Competitive analysis
Another time consuming task, that can now be done in seconds. This is found to be a super powerful and the results have still been impressive.
4. Getting flows
While designing user flow, it requires so much of brain storming. There are even chances that you forget any design flow. So, you can ask ChatGPT to get user flows, information architecture etc. or to verify your flows. This feature is particularly helpful when designing complex user interfaces with multiple paths and decision points. Thus, it makes our work more effective and less frustrating.
5. Getting ideas for page layout
Design page layouts and wireframes is a fundamental part of UI/UX design . ChatGPT provides a range of suggestions for page layouts that you can use as inspiration.
6. Deciding color schemes
You can ask ChatGPT to generate color scheme ideas by providing it with some context around your design project like target audience, any style guidelines. It provides you with the color scheme ideas based on this information. Apart from this, you can also use ChatGPT to get a feedback on different color schemes. It helps you to make informed decisions about which color scheme to use.
For deciding a color scheme, it’s important to provide it with as much content as possible about your design project as it will help ChatGPT to provide more relevant, useful insights and suggestions.
7. Design systems
Although, ChatGPT wouldn’t design the system. But, it can supply all the documentation needed. Here’s what I found:
8. Future concepts
It aims to provide the way users interact with, experience products and how to improve the experiences. It provides the future concepts according to our need. Also, there’re many resources from where I could get my next idea to work on. Now, when I feel about working on something new project in UX, I use ChatGPT to get me a reference. It provides me a ton of topics to work on.
Apart from all these, it also provides a range of suggestions for the design system like typography, iconography, color schemes etc. Get started with these sample prompts like:
- Get ideas for documenting typography in a design system.
- Generate prompts for documenting color schemes in a design system.
- Get ideas for documenting iconography in a design system.
It also helps in providing explanations for complex design term, making it easier to communicate with non-designers. This feature is particularly helpful when working with developers and project managers.
Here’re some prompts which I used to get started and I was amazed by the results.
- Explain UX to a 5 year old kid.
- Explain the concept of responsive design to a project manager.
