Discord has announced the upcoming launch of its Embedded App SDK, allowing developers to build apps and games that can be played directly within the platform.
Set to become available globally on March 18th, the Embedded App SDK lets developers create apps embedded in an iframe within Discord, essentially enabling the creation of new ‘Activities’ that users can play together.
“We want Discord to grow into the best place for developers to do it all: build, share, distribute, be discovered, and monetise their work,” the company explains.
“We want Discord to be where your app gets its start, where it finds a home in the communities of people around the world, and where it can be easily shared between friends.”
Developers will be able to build traditional text-based apps or rich interactive experiences that can be played instantly within Discord voice channels using the new SDK:
To encourage development, Discord is running an “App Pitches” contest offering up to $30,000 in funding for the best Activity prototypes submitted by developers.
In addition to the new SDK, Discord is also experimenting with allowing users to add apps to their accounts for use across the platform, rather than being confined to individual servers. Users will be able to try this new capability from March 18th.
“We want it to be easier for users to access apps, so we’re experimenting with a way for users to add apps to their accounts to use in spaces they’re in across Discord,” the company explains.
The announcements cement Discord’s ambitions to become a leading platform for app and game development, distribution, and discovery, building on its popularity among gaming communities.
Developers interested in getting started with the Embedded App SDK can find more information on Discord’s Developer Portal when it launches on March 18th.
